Nipples during pregnancy

breastchangesDuring the pregnancy the nipples are changed as well as all the woman's body, and these changes can cause a number of issues. It is clear that for successful breast-feeding you should prepare actively, because glandular tissue grows, breasts increase in size and become denser.
But the nipples during pregnancy should be subjected to change. For successful  breastfeeding they need to grow, to react to stimulation, and all this must happen before a baby is born.
Nipples changes during the pregnancy include the appearance of discharge for which the skin can react to irritation, itching, crusts. And we can not exclude the possibility of disease at the time of childbearing, so you have to visit a doctor
Nipples on  early stages of pregnancy vary from the very first days, in fact, as early as 5-6 weeks every woman notices that they were not like before.

If you are not pregnant nipples are light, pale pink, when you are pregnant they become darker, almost brown. They often become very sensitive, and even hurt, and all those early changes are included into the classic early signs of pregnancy.
Nipples on early stages of pregnancy are changing rapidly along with the breast, during the second trimester the changes stop, but by 20-25 week starts the production of colostrum, and this again calls attention to the breast and may be a problem. After pregnancy and breast feeding nipples lighten, turn back to the same size, but they will not be quite the same as before.
In this article we shall deal with all the normal changes and possible deviations from the norm, as well as analysis and possible solutions.
Possible nipple changes during the pregnancy
The sensitivity of nipples
Sensitivity of the nipples during pregnancy appears as early as on its first weeks. Why is it happening?
Prolactin, one of the hormones, which is preserved and released in the early stages in large quantities. It is also called hormone of lactation. Breast tissue and nipples in particular, have receptors for this hormone, and at its highest level, get a team to grow and develop.Due to the  increasing size of the areola for a few weeks at times, the nipple skin does not have time for these changes and isstrongly stretched, causing the sensitivity, and even pain. So if you have a sore, itchy nipples during pregnancy, perhaps even burning and tingling - it's not scary and it's not a disease but rather a sign of pregnancy.
Not all women have sore nipples during the pregnancy, some breast are almost unchanged, and this is normal, it depends on the sensitivity to prolactin. This does not mean that it will be a little milk after, this all is just very individual.
Is there a way to help  if nipples are aching ?
Yes, of course. You have to find the right size bra with a soft cotton, and begin using the products which prevent stretch marks on breasts during pregnancy.

During the pregnancy nipples swell due to the proliferation of mammary excretory ducts, they must be convexed, so that the baby could easily grab them with his/ her mouth. Areola are stretched just as a consequence of the breast gland increasing. At the end of lactation breasts size becomes smaller, and the areola area is also reduced but the nipples are more likely to remain bigger, then they were before pregnancy. In many ways the look of nipples during the pregnancy depends on heredity. Flat nipples may become an obstacle to feeding, and to prevent this, nipples should be prepared to breast feeding.
The color of nipples.
Nipples areola during pregnancy increases in diameter and darkens. The degree of darkening may be different, some women have almost brown nipples. In the same time, the color of the nipples during pregnancy may be the same color as the areola, or lighter.
Redness of the nipples during the pregnancy is observed more rarely and normally occurs in a very light-skinned women, natural blondes.
The darkening of the nipples during the pregnancy happens due to the deposition of melanin pigment, which is produced in the skin under the influence of sex hormones.
The terms when the nipples darken during pregnancy are different, for example, for some women this occurs on the earliest terms, as early as 6-8 weeks, but for others these changes are gradual. It should be noted that a strong darkening of the nipples during early pregnancy may become less pronounced during last months, stretching and increasing in size, areola gradually brightens.

During the pregnancy the nipples darken not all. Once again itdepends on the sensitivity to the hormones of pregnancy. If your  nipples have not darkened, there's nothing wrong with you. Not everybody have the reflection on another pigment, such as a dark stripe on the abdomen or chloasma spots on the face. At the same time, dark brown nipples, the color of which you probably do not like now will not remain forever, they are sure to brighten.
Darkening of the nipples during pregnancy Discharge from the nipple
Discharge from the nipples during pregnancy is very common, it does not need to be afraid of at all. Sometimes colostrum appears already in the early weeks, but the usual period of discharge emergence is the third trimester of the pregnancy. Like other symptoms of pregnancy, discharge from the nipples is a common symptom of preparing the body for childbirth, there is a kind of training before lactation.
What is colostrum? It is clear fluid with the patches of white or yellow, sometimes only white or only yellow fluid from the nipples.
Pregnancy does not preclude the possibility of simultaneous lactation, if you feed your baby during pregnancy, your breasts will continue to produce normal breast milk, though its taste may change, and this is a common reason baby's refusal to consume it. Yet prior to delivery is better to take a break for breastfeeding at least for a couple of months.
Preparing the nipples for breastfeeding during the pregnancy
The change of nipples during the pregnancy itself prepares the breast for feeding. At the tall order, no special  preparation of the nipple for feeding is required, but rather a psychological need to tune in to the  breastfeeding.
The breast should be specially prepared only in case of the flat and tight nipples and if the areola is not expandable.
Sometimes the nipples are normal, but not as responsive as they should. Rather than lengthen and become prominent in response to the stimulation they  are drawn. These nipples during pregnancy also require attention, as in this period they can be trained to respond to stimulation in the correct way, but the techniques, used in such cases, can cause the uterine contractions due to the oxytocin release. This is the reason for the prohibition of any breast manipulation due to the threat of miscarriage. The nipples massage during pregnancy is contraindicated in such cases.

If a woman is healthy and there is no threat of termination, then it is recommended to strengthen the nipples pulling them between your fingers. During the pregnancy this kind of massage can not be performed more then 1 minute, and can not be carried out aggressively or with violence.
Remember, even if you have flat nipples, it's not so important, the child still does not suck the nipple, but the breasts, so you will be able to breastfeed in any case.
Mammary readiness test for childbirth
The nipple stimulation during the  pregnancy leads to the release of endogenous (produced in a woman's body), oxytocin, a hormone that causes contractions. If a pregnant woman is ready for delivery, the uterus responds to this reduction. Mammary  readiness test for birth based on registration of uterine contractions in response to the nipple stimulation. It is rendered as positive if the CTG registers contractions in 3 minutes or earlier after the onset of stimulation, and at least three of such reductions are going on within 10.
In case of a normal passage of pregnancy there is no threat in nipple massage and should not cause labour. Only if the mother and the child are ready for delivery this can cause  real parodynia.
Problems with the nipples during pregnancy and how to solve them
If nipples during the pregnancy peel, are dry and cracked
Dry nipples during pregnancy is the problem which women often face . Why do nipples peel and dry?
As with other skin changes, dry nipples can be caused by vitamin deficiency, such as vitamin A, and B vitamins, hormonal changes and skin irritation with constantly leaking colostrum.
Typically, the nipples peel during last of pregnancy months, but some have to hit this at the very beginning. If you do nothing and simply endure, cracked nipples may appear which is quite not nice.
Peeling, dryness and cracked nipples during pregnancy are not an insoluble problem. Do you take  care after breasts skin? Do you use creams? Do not neglect the nipple and its area, be sure to lubricate this area with anti stretch products. Already caused cracks can be healed with bepanthen or sea buckthorn oil.

breast pregnancyIf  colostrums secession has began for you, use special pads for the chest, rinse it  with warm water without using soap twice a day, grease  nipples with cream for breast or even a baby cream. Colostrum can dry out, crust on the nipples should not be picked out specifically: what is washed away - that is washed off, avoid chest injuries.
Papilloma and a mole on your nipples
If you have warts and moles on the nipple, and the child will inevitably get it when sucking nipples,  it is better to get rid of them. Flat dark moles should not be removed. But hanging papilloma is definitely worth removing  before the birth of a baby. Consult the mammalogist. Such lumps may be removed even during pregnancy.
When you should consult a specialist:
- the nipple color change, redness, and a sharp temperature rise of the skin over it.
- abnormal discharges (the blood from the nipple, greenish, foul-smelling discharges and other strange signs)
- sensitive nipples during the pregnancy are normal, but the pain should not be permanent and it should not occur to one breast only.
